Moving Forward

Many amazing stories of tenant strength, courage, and determination live within the walls of Forward Housing’s affordable housing buildings. One such tenant, Denise, has agreed to share her remarkable story with us. The words “give up” have never been in her vocabulary.

What resonates the most about Denise is how wonderfully infectious her energy is. One meeting leaves you with a lasting impression of her beaming smile, warm disposition, and the animated yet considered and wise way she expresses herself.

Denise’s wisdom can be attributed to her unique and diverse experiences. A former sales executive, swim teacher, and lifeguard, Denise’s story began with a tumultuous childhood that led to her becoming homeless at the young age of twenty-two.

She eventually found housing with the help of a cousin, which created the foundation for her recovery but, although she had a roof over her head, she could hardly afford food. With tears in her eyes, she recounts having to fry flour and water together at times so she’d have something to eat.

At Forward Housing, we don’t believe that anyone should sacrifice basic needs to stay housed. Today, Denise can rest easy knowing she is not forced to choose between paying rent and putting food on the table. She feels that she, “has found like-minded people” at Forward. She continues, “You’re not just moving physically (into a suite); you’re moving emotionally. The intent of this place, it’s so real.”

Denise lived many lifetimes before finding Forward, working harder than she ever had before to get back on her feet after homelessness. Her charisma and intelligence helped her excel in her career, and her caring disposition helped her coach and mentor aspiring swimmers.

Denise has an uncanny ability to see others’ pain. She likes to heal souls that are bruised and scarred, like her own. Speaking about her purpose on earth, Denise remarks “When I see somebody recognize their potential, I fall in love with them. That’s why I’m here, that’s what this is about.”

Denise found Forward in the summer of 2021 several years after a car accident left her unable to work and forced her to sell her home. She felt completely overwhelmed with relief during her move. As she was settling in, she finally got all her things and the painful and beautiful memories associated with them out of storage.

Denise now regularly attends counseling, where after a lifetime of helping others, she is learning that it’s okay to put herself first. Finally having found a home where she can thrive, Denise credits much of her newfound optimism to Forward. “A sense of home is critical to one’s wellbeing. To be able to fuel a sense of stability is key to a person’s psychological state so that they can go out and share that positivity with others.”
