The challenge

Rental rates remain unaffordable for many low-income households, particularly those working minimum wage jobs, seniors who rely solely on government pensions and individuals on other forms of social assistance.

Your donation at work

For some Onward residents, paying rent still requires most of their income.

Many of the families we house report having had to choose between paying rent and putting food on the table or purchasing necessary medication.

We don’t believe that anyone should have to sacrifice basic needs to stay housed. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, Onward Homes has given many households the gift of stability and a safe and affordable place to call home.

Programming

Thanks to generous donors, Onward is able to offer residents more than just a home.

Onward has offered a variety of programs centered around improving the quality of life of residents. These include our Holiday Hampers, Gift of Warmth, Welcome Home Bundles, community gardening and the charitable activities of the Bridgeland Elves, to name a few.

There are many ways donors can strengthen resident connections and build vibrant communities. Whether you want to ensure a family has a gift to open on Christmas morning, provide cleaning supplies for someone transitioning from homelessness, or sponsor an Onward event, your donations create welcoming, inclusive communities and establish a sense of pride and belonging among the people we serve.

Capital needs

Calgary needs more affordable housing.

We have the lowest percentage of non-market units amongst major Canadian cities and most of the housing stock is more than 30 years old. Calgary still needs 15,000 additional affordable housing units to reach the national average.

Creating new affordable housing through the construction of new buildings and conversion of existing market units is critical to ensuring the sustainability of affordable housing in our community.
