A Mother’s Love

This Mother’s Day, we’d like to share a story many mothers can relate to. Rachelle* is a single mom and Forward Housing tenant who has persevered through hardship for the sake of her daughter’s future.

Those lucky enough to meet Rachelle will find themselves quickly enchanted by her uplifting spirit. Her love for her 7-year-old daughter, Ava*, is equally enrapturing.

In 2005, a young Rachelle was armed with aspiration, determination and hope after her laborious move from Mexico City to Alberta. Yet, right away, the company she worked for was abruptly acquired, leaving her jobless. She met her partner shortly after and they had a baby girl.

In the years following her daughter’s birth, employment- and health-related pressures caused escalating conflict with her partner. After a time, Rachelle made the difficult decision to remove herself and then five-year-old Ava from the situation. They moved into a shelter, which became their home for two long and frightful years.

While at this shelter, Rachelle worked three jobs and eventually managed to find a room in another, temporary one, which was focused on housing and supporting individuals who have experienced domestic violence. Rachelle’s social worker helped her apply to Forward for longer-term, more stable affordable housing.

Rachelle expressed relief upon being approved for her new Forward unit. When describing how she felt, she becomes emotional. “When somebody helps you, you become full of hope, and your faith grows stronger. I don’t have enough words to describe the joy I felt when I was accepted.”

Having found an affordable and permanent home, Rachelle no longer feels she must prioritize work over spending time with her daughter. She now works only one job and can afford healthier groceries and part-time childcare. Rachelle and Ava have more private time together, and she loves watching Ava play in their new home. Rachelle expressed that she is spending more time improving the quality of her life.

Rachelle’s story is a testament to motherhood and the powerful benefits of both persistence and secure housing. Affordable housing is about more than just shelter; it’s about providing an environment where families can create a better life – spending time with their children, feeling safe, and building a positive future.

To Rachelle and all the other tenacious moms… Happy Mother’s Day.
